HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
GRANDPA KROMER

December 13, 1895
Today would have been Grandpa Kromer’s birthday.
December 13, 1895. It is hard to believe he has been
gone now for awhile, and we sure miss him. He died on
Dec. 11, 1980. He sure was an old war horse especially
being a
World War I and II veteran serving in Europe both
wars. In
World War II he was a Master Sargent and fought
in the 28th
Infantry Division or known as the Bloody bucket
brigade-The Keystone patch from
Pennsylvania (They are famous for their stand
against the Germans in the Huegten forest before and
during the
battle of the Bulge). Grandpa got trench foot
right after the Battle of the Bulge and had to be
evacuated to England and was in the hospital for 6
weeks. He was lucky he didn’t lose his toes or feet.
When I asked him about the war he wouldn’t say much
about shooting at or killing the enemy but he discussed
the major destruction from war and he did say it was
HELL. He also lost his wife (Grandma Kromer) three
weeks after Grandma Moyer was born so he had to raise
three children by himself and fight in a war later.
Thank God he had his sisters and family to help him
raise his children. I remember when Uncle Dave and I
used to do work for him and he treated us like his
little
soldiers. He was tough but he was gentle. We
ran over his foot one time with the wheel barrow and he
cussed us up and down. Well Aunt Margie told us a story
about when he ran over his Father-in-law’s foot with the
Model T Ford and we told him that and he had laughed and
laughed about that incident. Not to mention he was
always up before the crack of dawn. I don’t know why he
got up at 4:30 am. in the morning. I guess old habits
for him were hard to break.
